Known variously as the X-plane, the X-35, the F-35 and the JSF, the Joint Strike Fighter was the first jet plane to take off vertically and accelerate to super-sonic speeds. (Although it is advertised as a short takeoff and vertical landing STVOL aircraft, as using a short runway it can lift more weight - fuel, weapons etc.). Therefore among other things, the Joint Strike Fighter will be a modern replacement for the British designed Harrier, the first Vertical Take Off and Landing (VTOL) jet fighter (only sub-sonic though).
