The factory is the British contribution to the collaboration production with the American Lockheed-Martin-designed Joint Strike Fighter. Known variously as the X-plane, the X-35, the F-35 and the JSF, the Joint Strike Fighter, the prototype of the jet fighter was the first jet plane to take off vertically and accelerate to super-sonic speeds. Therefore among other things, the Joint Strike Fighter will be a modern replacement for the British designed Harrier, the first Vertical Take Off and Landing (VTOL) jet fighter (only sub-sonic though).
